Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
With aging building stock and rapidly changing technology, most campuses face the difficulty of adapting existing space into modern learning environments. The renovation of classrooms in historic Carnegie Hall on the RPI Campus exemplified this challenge. We skillfully transformed existing classrooms into a large lecture room to accommodate up to 80 students. Flexibility was integral in the design; furniture can be easily arranged based on the need for individual or group assignments. Technology was unobtrusively integrated into the design to respect the historic architecture.
We have worked with RPI since 1994, when we planned and designed the Darrin Freshwater Institute for RPI’s campus on Lake George. Our other work on this campus includes renovations to the Cottage and Lodge to house students and researchers, and the Visualization Lab for the collaborative analysis of the lake’s ecosystem.
